MACHINIMA

Machinima is an emergent form of artistic play in which film makers and gamers use video games for animation purposes. On the surface, it is entertainment. Yet that only begins to explain the phenomenon deeply rooted in games' psychological reward system used to attract and addict users. Check here for regular doses.

MMOVIE
Voig

Marcus Eikenberry via Viceroy of WoWRadio comes news of epic proportions: MMovie. The film almost speaks for itself.  On August 22, Voig and Full Stealth Films released this two-minute theatrical trailer. Based on World of Warcraft  if you can't tell!  Voig explains, "The project...uses the real-time, interactive WoW environment and in-game characters supplemented with out of game models to create a series of parodies of memorable movie scenes. This film-making process, called "Machinima", has been done before on many platforms, including WoW, but MMOvie will be the first full-length theatrical machinima film." What are the Hollywoodien implications? For if Rufus Cubed Productions lead the way, this film has gone that much further...

Lessons in Play
L'art d'exploration: "This takes time!" Have we escaped the grind? Have we returned to semi-bounded environments that encourage exploration, sport, discovery, ingenuity, collaboration, and most of all a profound sense of adventure? Truly a legendary hero's journey, but what do you do when you get there? Can we now finally play the game? Perhaps? Live to grind....Trolls! And then do it again: speed the ultimate name of the game. But what is the underlying reward? Cheating?

Momentary cultural displacement of market capital.

CHRONICLES OF A GOLD FARMER 2
Total Halibut

Inflation, inflation, inflation! Question: does the supply of "farmed" gold rise faster than the permitted kind? Does the supply of farmed gold peak and level out? How infinite is supply driven by real world economics and Chinese wages? Lest we forget, gold farming operations are also constrained by the usual factors of production, the amount of farmable gold a direct factor of around 200g/day times a constant amount of workers. Time is of the essence! Does not the population of WoW realms rise as well introducing gold into 100+ different economies? Which factor is larger? Blizzard or IGE? Arguments against gold farming don't seem to be as simple as inflation this, inflation that. Once we get into negative externalities perhaps then we reach an interesting conversation. At the end of the day, however, perhaps gold farmer extermination as play poses an interestingly efficient solution to the problem. Governance by the people for the people! Perhaps a series of quests would be incentive enough to encourage the militia? "More work" Blizzard's peons might ask. And then forget...

Machinima or documentary? For the moment, I will say mocumentary.

DEATH-KNIGHT SPREE
Nyhm

As the game ends, where do players go to escape the grind? Making machinima Warcraft movies, begging for a truely interactive experience that film production ultimately provides.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT GM POWER
Dissou

What if WoW was like a video game? The power of corruption, the freedom to tinker, and the joys of "unproductive" play wrapped up nicely in this music video. What is to be said as the medium of WoW becomes more and more exclusive, losing any claims to a level playing field? Yet the field was never level to begin with. When did the hero's journey end and the emperor's grinding crusade begin? Have we truely lost that playful element in an era of relentless capitalism? Seems gold farmers and RMT have little to do with the joys found watching and dreaming of a virtual world seen here.
